A Small Town Worth the Visit: Dows, Iowa

Nestled in north-central Iowa, the quiet little town of Dows may be small in size, but it’s rich in history, community spirit, and hometown charm. With a population of just a few hundred people, Dows offers visitors something that’s getting harder and harder to find these days: a slower pace, friendly faces, and a true sense of community. Check it out HERE.

Founded in the late 1800s along the railroad line, Dows grew as an agricultural hub serving the surrounding farming communities. While the town has changed over the years, its welcoming spirit and pride in local traditions remain strong. (CLICK HERE for info on the most popular tradition!) It’s the kind of place where people still wave when you pass by and neighbors genuinely look out for one another.

Today, Dows continues to celebrate its small-town roots by supporting local events, businesses, and artisans. A few examples are The Dows Public Libraary, The Wright Freedom Rock, The Dows Historical Society and The Dows Community Grocery Store. Community gatherings like the Dows Market on Main bring people together to shop local, connect with neighbors, and enjoy a day in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere.

For your convenience while visiting the market, Dows has several nearby amenities within easy reach. Just down the block from the community building you’ll find United Bank & Trust, which has an ATM available if you need cash during the event. Just steps away from the event, Dows Family Grocery offers food, snacks, and beverages if you need to grab something quick while shopping or working your vendor booth. If you’re heading toward the interstate, there is also a Casey's convenience store located about two miles outside of town where you can find fuel, hot food, drinks, and other travel essentials. These nearby stops make it easy for both shoppers and vendors to stay comfortable and stocked throughout the day.

Visitors to the market will find a wonderful mix of handmade goods, locally produced items, and talented artisans from across the region. Whether you’re stopping by to find something unique, support small businesses, or simply enjoy a pleasant day in a charming Iowa town, Dows is the perfect place to do it.

We invite you to come experience the warmth and hospitality of Dows for yourself. Spend a little time exploring the town, meeting local makers, and enjoying everything this special community has to offer.

And of course, while you're here, be sure to stop by the Dows Market on Main from 10-4 on April 18th, 2026 and see what our amazing vendors have created!
